Have your say on an application for a generation authority for the proposed Supernode Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. This authority will allow the applicant to operate the generating plant and to connect to the transmission network.

The Supernode BESS is a renewable energy project located in the City of Moreton Bay, approximately 21.1 km north of the Brisbane central business district. Construction of the bidirectional battery energy storage system generating plant commenced in 2024 and infrastructure testing is due to start in July 2025. To operate the plant, the applicant, Supernode Operations Pty Ltd as the trustee for Supernode BESS 1 Project Trust must have a generation authority.

We are inviting feedback on this application to connect the generating plant to a transmission network. The connection will be via the South Pine Substation and currently has a maximum energy discharge capacity of 520 megawatts (1858 megawatt hours) at the beginning of the generation system’s life.

Permission requirements

Unless the infrastructure is to be located wholly on land the applicants own or lease, the operator must apply to the Regulator and be granted a generation authority under 179 of the Electricity Act 1994.

We must then seek feedback on the application from the public, including people who might be affected by or interested in the project.

Once feedback and other relevant matters have been considered, we will decide whether to issue a generation authority to the applicant to proceed with the proposed electricity generation activity.

Have your say

We are seeking feedback from the public about the application to assess:

  • the suitability of:
    • the applicants to hold a generation authority
    • the owner (also the applicants) to be the owner
  • other matters to be considered under section 180 of the Act.

Read the information paper to learn more about the application.
